Not what it claims to be
By Katrina W
Purchased this book for a college course I was taking. Believed the book was going to be respectable research articles pitted against one another to help broaden perspective. The reality was that a research article would be up "against" a random piece of writing that often didn't make much sense or have any real research in it at all. This made me feel that the author clearly wanted the reader to be swayed in one direction or another, which seems contrary to the way the book is marketed. My teacher stated she would not be using the book again because it was such poor quality.

Terrible
By JWANG, Ph.D.
I am an instructor at a research university and am actually appalled at some of the "research" used in this book. Just because a book has been printed many times (this book is in its 9th edition) doesn't mean it reflects high-quality content. I'm sure we can all think of many popular books that we personally find atrocious. Correlation is NOT causation!!!!!
In a nut shell, scientific means something that is is based on empirical and measurable evidence. Because you can really find "evidence" for anything you want to believe in, the quality of your evidence is vital. Evidence from high-quality sources (e.g., original research published in high-impact, peer-reviewed empirical journals) are going to provide a lot more support for your arguments than ones that come from low-quality "pseudoscience."
Although there are some research studies in this book that do come from high-quality research, the fact that the authors also included low-quality, questionable research eradicated any credibility they have. Case in point: the authors cited Paul Cameron (!!!) as a source for supporting the claim that gay adoption is harmful for children. Whatever your viewpoints are on gay marriage and parenting (and you are certainly allowed to have your own opinions- it's a free country!), Paul Cameron is NOT a valid researcher. It is a well-known fact not only in academia but also in the wider community that his "research" is biased to serve his own agendas. In fact, he has been officially expelled by social research organizations such as the American Psychological Association, the American Sociological Association, and the Canadian Psychological Association (see [...].
I am all about having different viewpoints on the same topics; being exposed to different viewpoints and arguments can help one develop important critical thinking skills (and in this age and time, where anyone can proclaim themselves to be an expert in basically anything, you REALLY do need critical thinking skills!) Listening to those whose opinions differ from your own can also help broaden your mind and help you grow as a person. However, the pivotal issue here is WHERE one is basing one's arguments from. Whereas evidence from high-quality and objective sources provide strong support and credibility for your arguments, evidence from biased, low-quality sources just detract from and weaken your arguments. By including pseudoscience in their book as "research," the authors failed to engage in the very critical thinking that they, ironically, wanted their readers to gain from reading this book.

poor quality
By ajt
I had to get this book for a college course. This book was intended to help you think and see issues from another person's perspective. Although there is evidence on each side of the issues, many of the arguments are very poor quality. They did not use scientific evidence many times and sometimes the argument is based merely on one person's opinion. I felt some of these arguments did not make sense and did not really follow the issue at all. Although I thought this book would be an interesting discussion starter in class, I was very disappointed with the quality of research and arguments that supported some of the issues.(We often discussed how the information did not make sense, instead of on the issues themselves.) I definitely do NOT recommend this book. The basis of the book is very interesting, I would love to see a well written book with high quality arguments on these issues.
