Review
This latest edition of Engineering Design Methods maintains the excellent standard set by its predecessors and is a valuable contribution to the engineering design literature. It is a useful text for both engineering students and practising designers. The engineering design methods presented are those that are of practical significance and the book is a must for anyone wishing to raise the standard of their design work. The design methods are described clearly and succinctly, examples are used to illustrate principles and design strategies are presented that show how the methods are best employed.—Dr Graham Thompson, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, UMIST, Manchester, UK

Furthermore, his interpretations are open enough to allow the inquiring mind to fill out the picture, incorporating and extending the ideas to fit the reflective designer's own needs. More prescriptive treatments fail to support learning in this regard.—Professor Larry Leifer, Stanford Center for Design Research, Stanford University, USA

This book is an excellent book as a textbook for design methodology both for undergraduate and graduate level. It includes all the necessary issues of design methods ranging from comprehensive theoretical frameworks on design and the design process to very practical examples. Fast reference for product designers & design students
By T. Carleton
Nigel Cross framed the world's dialogue about "design thinking" with his 2006 book Designerly Ways of Knowing. His updated edition of Engineering Design Methods is a wonderful quick reference of common product design methods, described by design phase. This is no easy task because designers are notorious about using themselves to prototype new processes and models, so any book will be challenged to document a general shared set of methods for the product design community.

For those interested in learning more, another resource is Hugh Dubberly's How Do You Design?, which is still a work of progress years later.

A useful book in order to give help in structuring and evaluating ideas,
By Ein Kunde
The author, Prof. Nigel Cross (The Open University,Milton Keynes, United Kingdom) offers by this book a strategic approach and a number of tactics as aids for designing successful products. It is intended primarly for use by students and teachers of engineering design and industrial design. Its main emphasis is on the design of products that have an engineering content, although most of the principles and approaches that it teaches are relevant to the design of all kinds of products. It is essentially concerned with the problem formulation and the conceptional and embodiment stages of design, rather than the detail design which is the concern of most engineering texts. This book can most effectively be used in conjunction with projects and exercises that require the exploration and clarificatioin of design problems and the generation and evaluation of design solutions. The author offers several interesting and useful methods that are structured in clear charts and diagrams that are easy to survey. Especially the evaluation methods are very interesting: According to my knowledge Nigel Cross ist the only author of a book of design who describes e.g. the Morphological Chart Method. Cross dos not present his methods in abstraction, but shows also the practical application by examples everybody can understand. Unfortunately, there are not many pictures or photos and colour is also a missing thing in this book. And the rare pictures you can find in this book seem to be a product of the period between 1970 and 1980, although this book was first published in 2000.

Building on the world-wide success of the previous editions, this new edition reinforces its original three-part structure. It is devided in the following chapters or headlines: Part One: Understanding Design (1. The Nature of Design; 2. Design Ability; 3. The Design Process); Part Two: Doing Design (4. New Design Procedures; 5. Clarifying Objectives; 6. Establishing Functions; 7. Setting Requirements; 8. Determining Characteristics; 9. Generating Alternatives; 10. Evaluating Alternatives; 11. Improving Details) and Part Three: Managing Design (12. Design Strategies; 13. Product Development).

In my opinion this book is not only very useful for students or lectures but also for practitioners. - Dipl.-Ing., Dipl.-GwL., StR. Christoph Erlemeier, Stuttgart, Germany -

Best value for money engineering design book out there
By Clint Steele
I have made this the main text for a mechanical systems subject that I lecture. The reason for this is that it has a good collection of tools that engineers would want to be familiar with, it has good introductory chapters on the nature of design (they explain the diverse nature of design, and do not push a simple single approach, like some engineering design texts), it explains design within the context of broader development, and it is a reasonable price. I think this is what makes it the best choice for students: it's a good balanced coverage and you know they will buy it.

I am familiar with other works by Nigel Cross, and think very highly of the research and writing that he has done. I have also corresponded with regarding research into design. Even though he is not qualified as an engineer, I have found his understanding of engineering design to be insightful and helpful. The reason I say this? I am clearly biased in writing this review, and I should make that clear.

Although, I think it is the best book out there on the topic when all things are considered, I did need to look elsewhere when I wanted to teach design for X and concurrent engineering. Nigel Cross has also written some excellent stuff on design cognition that I take from his other book 'Designerly ways of knowing' and would like to see in this book.

Finally, although I talk about it from the perspective of a lecturer, I do think it is a good reference for a practising engineer. The tools are covered in enough details to decide if they are right for what you want to do. Also, the preliminary chapters on what design is, what makes a good designer and design strategy are good to review on occasion. They will make you think about if you have become stuck in your ways of working as an engineer, and might need to approach things differently.

In summary - it lacks some things I would like, but it is the best compromise when it comes to engineering design texts for students or professionals.

Waking the Buddha: How the Most Dynamic and Empowering Buddhist Movement in History Is Changing Our Concept of Religion, by Clark Strand

Is there more to Buddhism than sitting in silent meditation? Is modern Buddhism relevant to the problems of daily life? Does it empower individuals to transform their lives? Or has Buddhism become too detached, so still and quiet that the Buddha has fallen asleep? Waking the Buddha tells the story of the Soka Gakkai International, the largest, most dynamic Buddhist movement in the world today—and one that is waking up and shaking up Buddhism so it can truly work in ordinary people’s lives. Drawing on his long personal experience as a Buddhist teacher, journalist, and editor, Clark Strand offers broad insight into how and why the Soka Gakkai, with its commitment to social justice and its egalitarian approach, has become a role model, not only for other schools of Buddhism, but for other religions as well. Readers will be inspired by the struggles and triumphs of the Soka Gakkai’s three founding presidents—individuals who staked their lives on the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and the extraordinary power of those teachings to help people become happy.

Quite a good job
By barbara goodwin
I am a Nichiren Buddhist, probably like so many others who bought the book. I was amazed at the author's profound understanding of the Nichiren Buddhism. For someone who doesn't practice this philosophy he did quite a good job of explaining it. The deeper elements were missing but then I had to keep reminding myself that since he doesn't practice it, there would be limits to his understanding. I think the one thing that stood out was when he mentioned that different people have said to him that Nichiren
Buddhist "isn't really a religion". I'm surprised that he didn't clarify that by "religion" most people mean a "God" outside of themselves; whereas this Buddhism believes that the "god" is within....that we are the Buddha. He did speak of personal responsibility for changing lives without mentioning begging some exterior being for help. He sort of danced around the issue perhaps not wanting to offend anyone that we don't believe that a "God" exists. However he did a mighty job and I was impressed. And in fact I DID learn new things.

Deeply inspiring!!
By Ethan Gelbaum
Having read essays by Clark Strand previously, I was really looking forward to reading his book, "Waking the Buddha". It was even more engaging than I imagined and I read it in only one sitting. Mr. Strand's accounts of the fearlessness of the first three Soka Gakkai Presidents, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda and Daisaku Ikeda, deeply inspired me and re-ignited a fighting spirit in my own life.

The extaordinary SGI movement so eloquently explained!
By Michael
What a great book...thank you Mr. Clark Strand! I was one of those baby boomers who delved into Buddhism after the social turbulence of the sixties...ricocheting from transcendental meditation to New Thought and eventually becoming a student of the Theravada. Always a seeker...but never completely satisfied. Meanwhile, the world became darker as human beings continue to wage war with one another and destroy nature. One day I was presented with a card that had Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo inscribed on it. It sat on my desk for a few years but I eventually researched, studied, and embraced this practice. It transformed my life!

This book explains the SGI movement and its vision for the world to experience lasting peace and security through humanity's embrace of the humanistic principles of Buddhism. Nichiren Buddhism is practical Buddhism. Progress in your practice leads to changes within you. These changes are always marked by concurrent changes in your environment, which mirrors your inner life. This is Cause and Effect. Faith in Nichiren Buddhism is constantly directed toward transforming reality.

Ray Bradbury is a modern cultural treasure. His disarming simplicity of style underlies a towering body of work unmatched in metaphorical power by any other American storyteller. And here, presented in a new trade edition, are thirty-two of his most famous tales--prime examples of the poignant and mysterious poetry which Bradbury uniquely uncovers in the depths of the human soul, the otherwordly portraits of outré fascination which spring from the canvas of one of the century's great men of imagination. From a lonely coastal lighthouse to a sixty-million-year-old safary, from the pouring rain of Venus to the ominous silence of a murder scene, Ray Bradbury is our sure-handed guide not only to surprising and outrageous manifestations of the future, but also to the wonders of the present that we could never have imagined on our own.Ray Bradbury is a modern cultural treasure. About the Author

In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ray Bradbury, who died on June 5, 2011 at the age of 91, inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and close to fifty books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time. His groundbreaking works include Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. He wrote the screen play for John Huston's classic film adaptation of Moby Dick, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted sixty-five of his stories for television's The Ray Bradbury Theater, and won an Emmy for his teleplay of The Halloween Tree. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, among many honors.

Throughout his life, Bradbury liked to recount the story of meeting a carnival magician, Mr. Electrico, in 1932. At the end of his performance Electrico reached out to the twelve-year-old Bradbury, touched the boy with his sword, and commanded, "Live forever!" Bradbury later said, "I decided that was the greatest idea I had ever heard. I started writing every day. I never stopped."

The poet laureate of science fiction
By A Customer
This is the first collection of Ray Bradbury's stories I ever read, and it still rocks! I was only 13, and it immediately put me into his own, lyrical and yet dark world: lovelorn sea monsters, pining away for foghorns; time-traveling big-game hunters who accidentally change our history; spaceships dispatched to collect a piece of the sun; dictatorships that outlaw any form of eccentric behavior, such as *not* watching television---a scary premise, indeed, since we're practically in that world now; and more. Bradbury's delight in telling stories, inventing fabulous glimpses into other worlds as well as our own, radiates from every page. His work is warm, but it is not overly sentimental---he is unafraid to let a story end very badly for its characters, if it should help him to make the point he has in his mind. Nor are his tales all scary and dark---one or two are positively hilarious. This is not just highly recommended---it is urged that you rush out and purchase it...

'Fear no more the heat of the sun...'
By Michele L. Worley
While these stories are excellent, most don't fit neat pigeonholes within Bradbury's work. Only some are SF. I've discussed them not in order of appearance, but alphabetically.
"The April Witch" - Cecy is plain-faced, 17, and odd - in fact, a witch from a witch family. She can take possession of any creature, live through its experiences - but she wants romance. So lovely Ann Leary finds herself going to the dance with the boy she's not speaking to...(If you're interested in Cecy's family, try _The October Country_ and _From the Dust Returned_.)
"The Big Black and White Game" - Set in 1940s Wisconsin. Once a year, two pickup baseball teams face off on a long summer day, just before the Cakewalk Jamboree, and somehow the white team always wins. But this year...hmm. If this appeals to you, look for other Bradbury stories like "Way Up High in the Middle of the Air".
"Embroidery" - A nuclear test scheduled for five o'clock has the women sitting on a porch worrying over fancywork rather than supper. An interesting parallel is implied, as one woman, having made a mistake early on, rips out the design...
"En La Noche" - Mrs. Navarrez has been grieving at the top of her lungs for days over her husband's departure for the army. The other sleepless adults in the tenement are growing desperate. When Mr. Villanazul comes up with a suggestion, guess who gets to carry it out.
"The Flying Machine" - The emperor of China sees a great wonder in the dawn - a man has built a kite that lets him fly! But the inventor isn't the only far-sighted man in this tale.
"The Fog Horn" - The old lighthouse keeper has told his assistant of many strange things, seen out here on the edge of the sea, to prepare him for these autumn nights when the strangest thing of all appears. One of Bradbury's best.
"The Fruit at the Bottom of the Bowl" - Acton just killed Huxley with his bare hands in Huxley's own house. The background of the murder is provided as Acton retraces his actions, trying to remove all traces of his presence. But even obsessive people can't always get everything.
"The Garbage Collector" - He liked his job, until civil defense created procedures for atomic attack.
"The Golden Apples of the Sun" - The ship is heading for the sun, to scoop up some starfire and take it back to Earth. A man may be killed by frost if he fears fire too much...
"The Golden Kite, the Silver Wind" - The mandarin has brought his chief advisor - his daughter - a problem. Kwan-Si has built a wall shaped like a pig - which threatens the mandarin's city, built in the shape of an orange. Each town is built and rebuilt, choosing a shape in response to one another. The final solution is ingenious. If you like this, seek out Barry Hughart's _Bridge of Birds_; Number Ten Ox's native village once had a similar problem. :)
"The Great Fire" - Nobody could quench it, because it was inside cousin Marianne - she's staying until October, and going out on dates every night. Father says he'll have been in the cemetery for about 130 days then...
"The Great Wide World Over There" - Cora, who always wanted adventure, has spent her life in the valley, going to town only twice a year. Illiterate, she can't escape through books. But now her nephew's coming to visit.
"Hail and Fairwell" - Willie looks 12, but he's 43. This isn't a variation on "Jeffty Was Five"; his mind is normal. While he can get by, he can't settle anywhere for long...
"Invisible Boy" - Charlie's staying with Old Lady while his parents are away. But she likes having him around, and sets about using witchcraft to keep him.
"I See You Never" - Mr. Ramirez left Mexico City for San Diego a little over two years ago. He's built a life for himself - a good life, by his lights. His landlady even believes that a good workingman has a right to get drunk once a week if he likes. There's only one problem...
"The Meadow" - That's only what it used to be. Then the movie producer came along, and said, Let there be Paris! Let there be Constantinople! And lo, hundreds of cities came into being. On the outside, it's a movie set. To the night watchman, it knocks the 'real' world into a cocked hat.
"The Murderer" - He's being interviewed by a shrink: the victims are yakking machines: telephones and the like. This used to be SF...
"The Pedestrian" - A companion piece to _Fahrenheit 451_. The writer walks for pleasure every night, so the cops have picked him up as a suspicious character.
"Powerhouse" - The woman, riding with her husband through the desert to her dying mother, never needed religion. During a great storm, they take shelter at a powerhouse in the desert. Bradbury explores the nature of faith and being alone a little, here. A quiet story, but richly textured as most of his work is.
"A Sound of Thunder" - Time Safari, Inc. advertises that if you name the animal, they'll take you hunting. After all, what difference could it possibly make to history - whether a dinosaur died a natural death or from a bullet, a few million years ago?
"Sun and Shadow" - A fashion photographer, trying to use a picturesque cracked wall as a backdrop, encounters Ricardo Reyes, who objects to his neighbourhood's poverty being treated as a stage set. A gem.
"The Wilderness" - Leonora and Janice are facing their last night on Earth. Tomorrow they catch the rocket, to meet their menfolk on Mars.

Bradbury's SF strength is in the humanity...
By Ryan Garcia (hose@webelite.com)
You've probably heard a half a dozen Ray Bradbury stories without even knowing it. His tales of space flights, Martian expeditions, and strange occurences on our own planet are all classics. While "Martian Chronicles" is arguably the best collection of Bradbury stories, this book also shows the amazing talent of Bradbury. His ability to mix the human with the fantastic makes for incredible stories.
This book collects several of the best stories Bradbury ever created in one volume. There are several books that group Bradbury stories together, but few contain the raw number of stories as this one.
My own personal favorite Bradbury story is in this collection: "A Sound of Thunder." This short tale of a time-travelling dinosaur safari is an amazingly powerful look at the wonder and consequences of time travel and personal behavior. The story is easily consumed by the youngest reader and just as easily debated by science fiction scholars for hours. I first heard this story on an audio tape during a family car trip--hearing it inspired me to read other Bradbury stories. To me, Bradbury will always be "A Sound of Thunder" and that's quite a reputation to have.
One of Bradbury's longer shorts, "Frost and Fire," is also included. This is an amazing tale of the rapid development of humans on Mercury. Rapid in that everyone grows quickly and dies young. Set against the backdrop of a planet that allows only a few brief minutes of freedom on the surface before the residents must hide from the scorching heat or blistering cold. The story can be appreciated from a pure SF perspective or just from the human side--Bradbury creates realistic worlds in the most fantastic location.
Two other stories are also stand-outs: "The Fog Horn" and "Here There Be Tygers." Saying anything about the actual plots would give away the stories, but I will say they both present unexpected twists that will have you thinking twice about your own normal everyday lives.
As a first introduction to Bradbury this collection is excellent. It gathers together a wide variety of his stories from various sub-genres and has enough to keep readers busy for a while. Ultimately you'll want to read other story collections, but this book will give you a taste of things to come.
For Bradbury fans who haven't read some of these stories I probably don't need to recommend the book at all--by now you've already clicked on a purchase link and had the book sent to you.
For everyone else I can only urge that you try Bradbury. Even if you aren't a science fiction fan, Bradbury is a very approachable author and his works cross the traditional boundaries of science fiction. This isn't nerdy Star Trek or hard-core Neuromancer. His stories are human and that's what makes them universal. Rocketships are entirely optional.

Amazon.com Review
A travelogue by Bill Bryson is as close to a sure thing as funny books get. The Lost Continent is no exception. Following an urge to rediscover his youth (he should know better), the author leaves his native Des Moines, Iowa, in a journey that takes him across 38 states. Lucky for us, he brought a notebook.

With a razor wit and a kind heart, Bryson serves up a colorful tale of boredom, kitsch, and beauty when you least expect it. Gentler elements aside, The Lost Continent is an amusing book. Here's Bryson on the women of his native state: "I will say this, however--and it's a strange, strange thing--the teenaged daughters of these fat women are always utterly delectable ... I don't know what it is that happens to them, but it must be awful to marry one of those nubile cuties knowing that there is a time bomb ticking away in her that will at some unknown date make her bloat out into something huge and grotesque, presumably all of a sudden and without much notice, like a self-inflating raft from which the pin has been yanked."

Yes, Bill, but be honest: what do you really think?

From Publishers Weekly
Journalist Bryson decided to relive the dreary vacation car trips of his American childhood. Starting out at his mother's house in Des Moines, Iowa, he motors through 38 states over the course of two months, looking for the quintessential American small town. "Some of Bryson's comments are hilarious--if you enjoy the nonstop whining wisecracks of a 36-year-old kid," determined PW.
Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
An expatriate American now living in England chronicles a trip around the United States in which he describes American foibles to the British. The first two chapters capture the tedium of a family vacation and the daffy absurdity of life in the author's home state of Iowa. Midwesterners will grab friends to read choice bits, saying "see." But after these wonderful opening chapters, the author's comic tricks become repetitive: "then I said this outrageous thing; no, not really, but . . . . " While the sometimes irrelevant statistics are interesting, they, too eventually become tedious. As the book grinds on, it descends into a litany of "then I went here, and next I went there." Browsers reading the opening bits will snatch it off the shelves, but many will return it unfinished. ($100,000 promotion; 50,000 copy first printing).

Wicked humour
By Mike Christie
Bryson was born in Des Moines, and moved to England in his early twenties, marrying and settling down there. This book documents a trip by car around America, starting and ending in Des Moines, after many years in the UK. The ostensible theme of the book is a search for the perfect small town; a sort of Ray Bradbury idealization of fifties America. There's no such town, of course, but Bryson just uses the theme as a springboard for some of the funniest descriptions, stories, and digressions I have ever read.
When I started reading this book, I laughed so much my wife wouldn't let me read it in bed. Then she picked it up and discovered how funny it was, and wanted to read it before me. Eventually we compromised, and kept it in the car; the rule was that whoever was driving had to read it to the driver. Several times, however, the reader was laughing so hard that they couldn't get comprehensible words out, and the driver had to pull over to the hard shoulder and grab the book for themselves.
Yes, he's a curmudgeon, as other reviewers here have noticed. That's just his style. He's not deep, either; his occasional ruminations aren't negligible, but he's no Mark Twain. But he has an acidly sharp eye for inanity and stupidity, and his anecdotal technique is flawless.
His other travel books are along much the same lines, but to me this is the funniest, though "A Walk in the Woods" does show he is capable of good introspective writing. "The Lost Continent" is sharp, satirical, acute, and unkind--wickedly funny in every sense of the word.

Depressing and repetitive. Move on to his other works
By Ameri-Aussie
I had high hopes for this book since I thoroughly enjoyed and laughed out loud while reading Bryson's 'In a Sunburned Country'. I was more than a little disappointed after finished `Lost Continent' I came away feeling more than a little disappointed.

Before I bought this book I was puzzled at the contrasting reviews here and I initially took the most of the negative reviews with a grain of salt. I figured these were written by people who mostly just took offense way too easily and were unable to laugh at themselves as Americans. I have to say though, after reading the book I find myself agreeing with some of the negative reviews of this book.

First off, as an American that has lived overseas for 3 years now, I feel I'm more than capable of looking at America with an objective eye. I'm completely aware of America's many shortcomings - ie. the propensity for urban sprawl, the seemingly declining interest in it's rich history, the ever growing dependence on technology and increasing laziness that invariably comes with it etc. etc.

Having said that, I still regard this book primarily as just one endless, tiring, repetitive rant by an unhappy man. One would be hard pressed to find more than a couple instances where Bryson spent more than three of four sentences at a time describing anything he found ENJOYABLE. As one reviewer pointed out, Bryson comes across as being exactly like the kind of people he constantly complains about in this book...rude, ignorant, and, just like Bryson himself, overweight (apparently he hasn't stepped in front of a mirror lately). One has to wonder why someone would put out a book that is so consistently sour in tone. If I had just finished such a thoroughly unsatisfying and unhappy trek as this, I would be hard pressed to come up with a good reason (other than a quick buck perhaps) to actually write a book about it. Let me get one thing straight, if this were a book about Canada or anywhere else outside the U.S. I would feel the same way. Yes, there are a few funny passages in his book, but his air of superiority along with the overuse of metaphors pretty much dampen it at times. As demonstrated in `In a Sunburned Country', his strength lies in sharing facts and history of the places he finds himself in, and the humor is always much more engaging when it isn't over the top and written as if he's trying to impress himself.

There was a span of about 12 years between the writing of `Lost Continent' and `In a Sunburned Country', and it shows. This is a younger Bryson, a man who seems to have a problem with every little detail, and it becomes increasingly tedious and irritating as the book goes on. He rarely displays anything other than contempt for the places he finds himself in. A couple of other reviewers also made valid points when they found it curious that (with the exception of his Iowa drug buddy) he never manages to engage anyone in anything resembling a meaningful conversation to actually get a handle on their mindset (as he did in "In A Sunburned Country' for instance). His interactions with locals are mostly limited to ordering food at local restaurants and asking for directions. He seems perfectly content coming to conclusions about entire groups of people based on no real substance and communication whatsoever.

In this book, sadly, he comes across as nothing more than a sarcastic, anti-social loner with a bone to pick with just about everyone and everything. Any remotely kind words he has about anything (and they are few and far between) are all but smothered by the sour tone of the book as a whole. I SO wish I could recommend this book for others to read, but I'd be lying if I said it's time well spent.

Young Bryson Can't Match the Mature
By Wayne A. Smith
This is my third Bill Bryson book. Thank goodness this was not my first, for I probably would not have picked up "In a Sunburned Country," and "A Walk In The Woods."
Where Bryson's latest books are droll, witty and endearing, "The Lost Continent" is frequently petty, forced and mean. In this book Bryson travels around 38 states in a beat up Chevette, often through small towns and out of the way places not usually visited by many. He didn't have a very good trip.
Most of this book revolves around the author's put-downs of people he sees and caustic comments about places he visits. After a few hundred pages, the observations seem awfully gratuitous. Where disappointments, angst and difficult people were treated with amusement in his later books, here he often dismisses similar trials here with the brilliant and trenchant observation "FU". Not much authorship in those moments.
Not to say that there aren't some funny passages. Several times on the train, I found myself reading out loud. However, I also found myself speed reading ahead several times, an unfortunate first for a Bryson Book. Bryson's later works also weave a good deal of interesting historical background and place descriptions into the book. That is almost totally missing in this effort.
He occasionally comes up with some awfully good writing. For example, he described driving toward the mountains in Colorado as "driving into the opening credits of a Paramount Picture." (sic). Unfortunately, there are not enough of those moments and instead too many paragraphs describing how he had another bad meal in another bad town with too many ice cream and pizza parlors and not enough ambiance or fetching waitresses to suit his tastes. Bryson has produced much better. But don't let this book (or review) put you off an author whose books can be very satisfying companions. Just go for his more recent stuff.

The Art of Computer Programming, Volume 4, Fascicle 6: Satisfiability, by Donald E. Knuth

This multivolume work on the analysis of algorithms has long been recognized as the definitive description of classical computer science. The four volumes published to date already comprise a unique and invaluable resource in programming theory and practice. Countless readers have spoken about the profound personal influence of Knuth’s writings. Scientists have marveled at the beauty and elegance of his analysis, while practicing programmers have successfully applied his “cookbook” solutions to their day-to-day problems. All have admired Knuth for the breadth, clarity, accuracy, and good humor found in his books.

To continue the fourth and later volumes of the set, and to update parts of the existing volumes, Knuth has created a series of small books called fascicles, which are published at regular intervals. Each fascicle encompasses a section or more of wholly new or revised material. Ultimately, the content of these fascicles will be rolled up into the comprehensive, final versions of each volume, and the enormous undertaking that began in 1962 will be complete.

Volume 4 Fascicle 6

This fascicle, brimming with lively examples, forms the middle third of what will eventually become hardcover Volume 4B. It introduces and surveys “Satisfiability,’’ one of the most fundamental problems in all of computer science: Given a Boolean function, can its variables be set to at least one pattern of 0s and 1s that will make the function true?

Satisfiability is far from an abstract exercise in understanding formal systems. Revolutionary methods for solving such problems emerged at the beginning of the twenty-first century, and they’ve led to game-changing applications in industry. These so-called “SAT solvers’’ can now routinely find solutions to practical problems that involve millions of variables and were thought until very recently to be hopelessly difficult.

Fascicle 6 presents full details of seven different SAT solvers, ranging from simple algorithms suitable for small problems to state-of-the-art algorithms of industrial strength. Many other significant topics also arise in the course of the discussion, such as bounded model checking, the theory of traces, Las Vegas algorithms, phase changes in random processes, the efficient encoding of problems into conjunctive normal form, and the exploitation of global and local symmetries. More than 500 exercises are provided, arranged carefully for self-instruction, together with detailed answers.

Volume 4 is growing to contain some very exciting aspects of computer programming.
By Josh Berry
SAT solvers are a topic that I naively covered in college, and then never returned to. As a course to learn how to build a SAT solver, this text provides a variety of methods that can be used for stretching programming muscles.

More, though, the sections at the beginning showing what a SAT solver can be used for are particularly eye opening. In many ways, it paints SAT as a brute force hammer for solving problems. It is an interesting form of brute force that is widely applicable and can still be used, however. I'm looking forward to giving myself time to work on the LIFE transitions problem. (I may cheat and use Knuth's version of SAT solvers posted on his website.)

After that, it is interesting to see the empiricism that goes into analyzing the various algorithms developed. Most that have not read him believe Knuth to be focused on the theoretical limits of algorithms. One need only look at the chart on timings to see that this is not true.

As in previous books, I confess most of the exercises are above my ability. Luckily, you are encouraged to read the answers and should not be put off by the challenge of the problems. Instead, it is the challenges that makes things fun.
