Good, but should be better

I originally wrote a review of this book that was somewhat negative. Now that I've had a chance to review the field of works available on this subject, I feel inclined to upgrade my review somewhat.

The work has some decided pluses and minuses. On the plus side, it is probably the most accurate description of spoken Tamil that you will find. This is more of an accolade than it may sound. It is very difficult to pin down what "proper" spoken Tamil consists of, but this book does a better job than anything else in describing Tamil as it is spoken in Chennai.

In fact, it does a bit too thorough a job. Tamil's phonetic system is not simple, and this book does not go out of its way to make it any easier. The new student might be excused at first blush from not believing that what he hears on the CD's is actually the same dialogues he reads in the book; the authors made a point of speaking at a fast clip, like normal Tamil, but it leaves little scope for the learner to get his arms around the pronunciation. There are sound files available online at various websites that are easier for the beginning learner to deal with than the ones designed for this book.

There are other drawbacks to the book that can't be disregarded. Some portions of the grammar are simply not described; the authors apparently don't care to explain what the Tamil infinitive form is and how it differs from the stem - the learner is left to figure that out for him/herself. The types of adjectival endings are not explained in sufficient detail. Worst of all, the vocabulary lists purport to indicate what chapter a word was introduced, and it is wrong in almost every occasion, and in fact a lot of words are used in the lessons that are never explained. This fact tends to pull the rug out for me on whatever virtues the book has.

Despite all this, it is the best bet in town if you want to learn some Tamil on your own. But it won't be easy.

Good book, if you know the language a little

This is probably not the ideal book if you have NEVER heard/attempted spoken tamil before. But, if you are familiar with another Indian/South Indian language and want to learn Tamil, this is a good book. There are several very realistic dialogues with English transations that are used as a teaching aid throughout the book. Personally, I have found the book extremely useful, but I have lived in Chennai for 4 years and I can understand most of it. Thanks to this book, I have been able to talk to my mother-in-law in near-fluent tamil in about 4 weeks. Another problem is there aren't too many other Tamil books out there, so by all means, give this a try. Overall, it is a very well written book.

an enormous challenge

There are so many challenges in studying Tamil that in a book of this size it is necessary to consider certain trade-offs. The spoken language differs considerably from the written, and it is a very difficult language to pin down to a phonetic system. So what we have here is a book that introduces the alphabet, but has little else to do with writing. Another challenge comes from the speed with which Tamilians usually speak their language; the authors have opted for authenticity, which means the speakers are talking very rapidly indeed, to a point where it is even hard to pick out individual words. One solution might be to buy this book along with Kausalya Hart's 'Tamil for Beginners' (audio should be available from Cal-Berkeley, and the author's recording is at a much easier pace to follow). Also, the Hart book teaches the alphabet completely at the beginning and it is used in all of the subsequent lessons.

Still, 'Colloquial Tamil' is a useful book to have, given the very few resources available for Tamil learners. The dialogues get more interesting as the work moves along, and with a lot of practice listening to the accompanying CDs (sold separately), they will become clearer. A language of instant gratification this is not.

thorough coverage of synoptic meteorology

Bluestein's second volume is much more qualitative than the first; instead of dozens of derivations, he gives the reader a solid discussion of cyclones, applications of QG theory, fronts, jets, and then severe weather.
If you are new to meteorology, you'll still need a strong mathmematical background to follow Bluestein's text. The book is written at the academic level...I believe that it is best suited as a reference for those with prior courses in meteorology.
There are not many review problems at the end of any of the three chapters; this is disappointing, as there could easily be dozens (or more!) per section. Still, Bluestein's two-volume series is a must-have for all serious meteorologists.

Definitely a much more readable and applicable discussion of dynamic meteorology than the archetype book by Holton.
Part II is more geered toward operational forecasting and if you had dynamic meteo in college and still have Holton, only purchase Part II. Part I is a nice review of what you should have all ready known and only really used again since college if you are in grad school...otherwise, Part 2 is great, detailing synoptic wx systems and the interaction with QGOE forcing, etc...a nice comprehensive review, and some things new too, well worth the buy (only drawback is the price, ouch!!!)

All the weather plus the mathematics behind it

This is the second of two volumes by Bluestein and it is filled with useful information and presented in an engaging manner. Many meteorology textbooks (unfortunately) choose between presenting synoptic meteorology and dynamic meteorology--you're left to synthesize them yourself. The great virtue of this volume is that they're both here in all their glory, so you not only learn the mathematics but also get a feel for modern synoptic analysis. Bluestein is perhaps most famous for his tornado chases, but this volume proves that he is also a master of theory.

About the Author

Dr. CHARLES CONRICK IV has an extensive background in the business, finance, and trading environment. After a long career in investment planning and small to mid-size business valuation, he entered the academic world in 2002 and is now an Associate Professor of Finance at Dickinson State University in Dickinson, North Dakota. Charles has also been an active options trader for the past five years. He holds a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from Argosy University with a double major in accounting and finance. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

SCOTT HANSON is an accounting professor at a regional university and is an active trader in the options market. Prior to arriving in academia, he held several key financial positions in U.S. corporations and spent some time as an auditor with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Hanson is a CPA, and earned an MBA from Golden Gate University and a master's of accounting from the University of Georgia.

Not Ready For Prime TIme

I know a fair amount about options trading, in general, and credit spreads in particular because I trade them every day as a professional. I thought that this book would offer far more than it did. In fact it could have been written on about 20 pages including the Table of Contents and Index pages. The authors have you trading SPY ETF options using weekly options, a Delta of 10 or less, and a Standard Deviation of 1.8 Sigma which equates to roughly 92% probability that the options will expire Out-of-the-Money.

They also spend a lot of time touting Oracle's Crystall Ball program which is supposed to identify the best SPY contracts to use in the vertical spread. Page X of the Preface pages gives you a Username and Serial Number for the 180-day free trial (an Excel spreadsheet add-in) but I was unable to make the Username and Serial Number work. I called Oracle's Crystal Ball sales team and they said that they have been "having problems" with the information in the books that link to the Crystal Ball site at Oracle and were gracious enough to send me the software and a new license.

The author(s) also spend fair amount of time touting the virtues of eOption, a broker where you can trade options. Their commissions for options trades are reasonable (and negotiable) but not as good as other firms such as Interactive Brokers and ThinkorSwim. I much prefer (and use) the latter because I can set up the trade screen to show ATM, ITM, and OTM probabilities and any or all of the greeks, implied volatility and much more. For setting up a vertical credit spread I think ToS' order entry screen is superior to all others. As is their analysis page.

I have no doubt that the authors know the subject and what they're talking about but they take the reader through a forest of superfluous information in order to get to the bottom line which is trade bull put and bear credit spreads using weekly options with a Delta of less than 10 and an OTM probability of 92%.

I could not, in good conscience, recommend this book to anyone.

Interesting, but where is the Website?

I have read many books on Options Trading Strategies and find this book to be average at best.
The subtitle of the book is "A Study of the 1.8 Standard Deviation Inflection Point". Very little time was spent explaining this critical part of the book, even though an entire chapter is devoted to it. The concept is talked about, but never explained.
Some of the chapters are interesting with some helpful ideas regarding money management and setting up the trades.
The most disappointing part of the book is it's offer of a free 180 day trial of Oracle's Crystal Ball Software and access to the authors website which promises some free additional information as well as more "goodies" for a subscription fee. The Problem is that neither of these sites allow you access, with Oracle not recognizing the "username" or "password" provided in the book. You are provided with a "password" for the author's website, but no username, so it also is useless. Tell me how to access these sites and I would be happy to add a few stars to my review.
I love trading Vertical Spreads and would not mind paying for the content they offer if I could only access it. The book "hooks" you from the beginning with all of these great ideas that are never explained. I guess some of us really never learn. If it's too good to be true................

Simple, Straightforward, and Insightful

I have been looking into different trading methods and I have been skeptical of the numerous claims that they have made because most are based on opinion whereas this trading method is based on a scientific process and analysis of a tremendous amount of data. The concept is very simple, and very successful. Casinos have been using this strategy for many years and they have been able to get enormous returns on their investments and finally someone has been able to use a great tool, Crystal Ball, and all its power to identify a way in which they can analyze the data and determine within 1.8 standard deviations what will happen and then be able to bet on that. With a 95% success rate as they state in the book I am intrigued thoroughly by this strategy and will begin looking into it more deeply and will be installing the Crystal Ball on my computer so that I can begin using this same strategy in my own investing. I cannot wait to see what my returns are over the course of the year and i am confident that they will be substantial, as long as i can avoid the psychological games that I can succumb to if I take too much account of the losses that are inevitable to happen.

It's easy. It works

I am on this diet. I have 27 lbs so far. It's easy. It works. No extra costs. All you need is a measuring cup (measuring plate is optional). Count the cups. Watch the weight drop off. I have another 75-100 lbs to lose. It's not going to happen overnight, but it is happening. Eat what you like. Measure your food in cups. Lose weight.

Fantastic book about the "real" Italy!

For many years we have been in love with Italy. The food, the wine, the landscape, the beautiful stonehouses and the wonderful friendly Italian people. Like most people we have travelled to Tuscany, Rome, Venice, Lago di Como and Lago di Garda. Why? Beacuse talking to travel agencies and friends these were the only places that they knew. We have had some great trips, but we have never really found the "real" Italy, where there are few turists and the local people only speak Italian. However, after reading this exciting book written by 2 Danes, I think we have found the region we have been looking for: Piedmont in Northern-Italy where Torino is the capital. Fantastic food (truffles in the autumn), the best wines in Italy (Barolo and Barberesco), close to the sea in the summer and close to some of the best skiing in the winter. Sounds just like the perfect location for us. The book tells the story about a family that did what many of us dream about, but very few dare to do: They bought a ruin in the hills of Roccaverano and converted it into a wounderful vacation house. It is done in details, but also with a great sense of humor. In fact the entire book is written in a very personal way with lots of great tips and stories about the wine, the food and the people of this region. The pictures are amazing and you really fall in love with the area. We have already booked a 3 week trip to Piedmont in the beginning of June this year. Thank you Erik and Jesper for opening up our eyes to this region!

I have not had time to read this book. But I would like to correspond with the authors. Because I think the house was in my family in the 1700's and would like to talk to the owner. I have not done anything about this question but will in future. Sincerely Suzette Coleman. It was wonderful to get the book and in good shape too.

Excellent book, takes beginners from basic HTML to programming PHP applications, even covers security issues. Programming can be complicated, but Alan covers a lot of the little details very well. It walks you through just about everything you'll need to get started with the language and explains it in a nice, easy to read way. Instead, it focuses on the audience it was intended for, providing a good overview of the language and how to get your feet wet.
It's well written and easy to follow with a simple step by step format. The author keeps it interesting with exercises that really accelerate the learning process. Great book which I highly recommend.

This is a true beginner's guide. If you know anything about PHP from before, this book probably won't give you much new information or knowledge, but it seems to be very helpful for those starting out. Everything is well-explained, simple, the examples are good and I think anyone can follow it easily. Give it a try if you are willing to learn by yourself, it will be a smooth start.
