Years Ahead of It's Time

This book is about the work of Dr. Sidney Haas. The book was written at the end of his career, in the 1950's, before the adoption of a gluten-free diet for Celiacs. He was the first doctor to successfully treat, and possible cure, Celiac Disease. Before this diet, about 25 percent of children died of this mysterious disease. He had figured out that it was certain carbohydrates, not fat and proteins, that were causing the problem. This diet was different, however, than the universally adopted gluten-free diet today. His diet, which was called the Haas Specific Carbohydrate Diet, eliminated certain carbohydrates that were difficult to digest. (The diet is now called the SCD, or Specific Carbohydrate Diet). He believed that certain carbohydrates were feeding a disease causing gut flora, and removing those carbohydrates starved out that bacteria, allowing the patient to heal. When mainstream medicine dumped the SCD in favor of the easier to follow gluten-free diet, Dr. Haas still insisted it was the type of carbohydrate, not just the gluten. Modern research is now beginning to catch up to Dr. Haas, in both intestinal disorders and autism. The role of gut flora, and the influence of carbohydrates on those flora, are beginning to reveal themselves in research.

What is also interesting in this book, is he points out an odd behavior in some of the more severe patients, behavior that most parents of autistic children would recognize. He also mentions, as early as the 1920's, that other researchers in this field noticed this behavior and were "struck by the lack of attention" it recieved. Fast forward to modern times and many parents of autistic children with gi issues are still struck by this as well. This is a fascinating book. Dr. Haas covers the history of research done in the medical field on Celiacs, as well as his own research and experience.

This is a really good book, and I was amazed at how far back I was able to tract down my celiacs disease, clear back to birth and the different thing with my health that were going on for 63 years.

Clear, informative and highly implementable advice

Although the Balanced Scorecard has taken over performance mangagement thinking in business, its linkages and adaptability to public and non-profit organizations has remained extremely challenging. I currently am resposible for leading planning and strategy development for a large social services provider in Canada. Being a strong proponent of Balanced Scorecard theory, I anxiously waited two months for Paul Niven's latest book to hit the shelves in hope that I could adapt the balanced scorecard approach to evaluate our organization's strategy. Long story short >> Balanced Scorecard for Government and Nonprofit Agencies was an incredible investment, and we are now on the way to better measuring and reporting on our organization's progress with the help of this book's advice, tips and proecess design steps.

Good & Practical Book on Balanced Scorecard

I've read most of the literature on the Balanced Scorecard and the previous books by Norton & Kaplan and Paul Niven himself. Being a Management Consultant of 15 years, I worked with numerous for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and have the usual skepticism towards theory books. This latest book on Balanced Scorecard was easy-to-read with numerous examples from Balanced Scorecard implementations in public sector. I found the step-by-step approach to be practical and quite down-to-earth with numerous take aways for a reader interested in BSC or a performance management practitioner, like myself. The book rightly touches upon the challenges in the scorecard implementations, and offers valuable advice. If you haven't read any previous books on this subject, you can read this book alone for a good idea on what the Balanced Scorecard is all about, and how you go about its implementation.

If this administration and communications tool has been hailed as one the best new concepts in the business world, in nonprofit and government administration it can have even more impact. It is a great general introduction, but even seasoned experts will find enlightenment and a great very updated bibliography. Works very well as a textbook for nonprofit management with HBS cases.

This Book Opened My Mind to What Might Be Possible

I have never read a book that has caused me to really think about the world beyond my own perception and what it means to me, until I read “Explore Your Destiny – Since Your Life’s Path is (mostly) Predetermined”. I have always felt that I must have had a higher purpose, but I didn’t know what to make of it. With the help from this book I am beginning to understand the path that I am on and why I have gone through certain events in my life. I certainly believe that if you have unanswered questions on why you are in the life that you have and what is the reason you are here, you should read this book to start to understand how loved we are and how we are guided throughout our life.

brian foster wrote a very good book. one part affected me in a very positive way--that there is a world we will eventually live in where there is no evil and all the souls there are purified. reading that lifted my spirits very much because i will eventually live in that kind of world. knowing that i will live there eventually helps me to be hopeful and positive while living in our world. i eagerly look forward to living in that kind of world.

This book is so informative

I haven't heard of Spiritism before, but I have read many books on Spiritualism. For the first time Explore Your Destiny, puts it all together, why we are here, what is our purpose in life, what is the spirit world like, etc. I now understand why we must have multiple lives and why we must occasionally suffer. I now have a better understanding of my life after reading this book.

The book had a good concept

It is a very good book, easy to understand, the normal mathematic basics are all you need to understand the theory of this book.

He begins with the Solow growth model. It is a static model and can't explain growth over time and the differences between countries in output per person. From that point of view he turns to the Ramsey model. The overlapping generation model is a special case of the Ramsey model. Diamond developed a good model for dynamic analyses. He uses the overlapping generation model for wealth aspects. All models can't describe growth within the economy. It has no productive factor produced in a growth model, like the ak-model. The endogenous growth model deals with it and discuses growth from different point of views. He concentrates on a special model of knowledge. Human capital is introduced later in the Solow model. Knowledge is symbolized in the R&D sector. The Romer model is based on it. The company sells the knowledge via a patent to the market and the rest of the economy behaves competitive. Finally the endogenous growth model is tested. The difference between countries in their output per person comes next. He uses the Solow growth model with human capital. Most of the differences come from other factors. Social infrastructure is a way out and introduces several aspects especially lobbying, tax benefit, rent seeking and geographical factors. The real business cycle based on the Ramsey model. The fluctuations are modeled from the balanced growth path. Two disturbances are modeled, technology and government purchases. Money has no influence in the real business cycle model. It is modeled in the rigidity chapter. Here you have the new Keynesian model with modern fluctuations and rigidities on prices wages and incomplete competition. The IS shock is introduced and how money influences the prices and output. It includes the Phillips curve, menu costs and the Lucas model. The static rigidity model is combined with the real business cycle model. The dynamic stochastic equilibrium model tries to form a time dependent model. It is a Walrasian model with effect of monetary shocks and shows the influence of rigidities to prices and output. In this model the prices are fixed before or during different periods. The result is a modified Phillips curve, the new Keynesian model and a microeconomic based foundation.

Consumption and Investments are the inputs in the growth model and they are very important to fluctuations. The consumption chapter is based on the permanent income hypothesis. The investment chapter is based on Tobin's q and it is stressed against interest fluctuations and tax policy. The financial contract is characterized by asymmetric information. The investor and financier are presented by an equation and the optimal solution is represented.
The labor market is a non Walrasian market, like it is explained in the real business cycle model. The departure from the equilibrium is described with the
efficiency wage. The labor market is a heterogeneous market and there are searching and matching problems. The contract model explains the rigidities of wage contracts.
The last two chapters are a bout macroeconomic policy. The monetary policy is about the right measure to fix the inflation rate to a low level and find an optimal policy for setting the inflation target. The last chapter includes the government in the growth model and debt models are described.

This is a really useful advanced-intermediate macro text

This is a really useful advanced-intermediate macro text, but it contains almost nothing about the open economy. Maybe the United States can be treated as a closed economy as a first approximation, but most others can't. It would be nice to see more attention paid to these issues in future editions.

Excellent graduate textbook

This is an excellent textbook in macroeconomics! It combines rigorous theory, very clear intuition and great empirical applications (this favorably contrasts with textbooks doing data-free macroeconomics and really helps to understand questions and issues that macroeconomists try to address). The text also covers a broad range of topics ranging from growth to business cycles to optimal policy. Problems are very helpful to master the material. The text is also unusually balanced for a macroeconomic textbook in the sense that various theories are given fair treatment and assessment. Highly recommend for graduate students!
