The history of aesthetics, like the histories of other sciences, may be treated in a two-fold manner: as the history of the men who created the field of study, or as the history of the questions that have been raised and resolved in the course of its pursuit. The earlier History of Aesthetics (3 volumes, 1960-68, English-language edition 1970-74) by the author of the present book was a history of men, of writers and artists who in centuries past have spoken up concerning beauty and art, form and crea tivity. The present book returns to the same subject, but treats it in a different way: as the history of aesthetic questions, concepts, theories. The matter of the two books, the previous and the present, is in part the same; but only in part: for the earlier book ended with the 17th century, while the present one brings the subject up to our own times. And from the 18th century to the 20th much happened in aesthetics; it was only in that period that aesthetics achieved recognition as a separate science, received a name of its own, and produced theories that early scholars and artists had never dreamed of.

Brilliant history of aesthetic concepts
By Christopher Andrew
The much-beloved Professor Wladyslaw Tatarkiewicz (1886-1980) was Poland's greatest historian of philosophy and aesthetics. He was the very embodiment of a kindly, sage philosopher, and educated several generations of students and intelligent laymen.
Tatarkiewicz's monumental three-volume "History of Aesthetics" is an unrivaled compendium of western aesthetics thought, up through the 17th century, arranged chronologically and by author. The present book, "A History of Six Ideas," traces the evolution of these concepts from antiquity to our time on a thematic basis.
Discussed in this book are six central concepts: art, beauty, form, creativity, mimesis and aesthetic experience.
Tatarkiewicz's book displays his hallmark clarity and concision. The text is rendered from the original Polish with admirable grace and fidelity by the translator, Christopher Kasparek. The book is illustrated with reproductions of engravings, principally from the Warsaw University Library Engravings Room, that depict the concepts under discussion.
"A History of Six Ideas" is an indispensable reference for students of philosophy and aesthetics, and a treat for the curious layman who wishes to understand the intellectual foundations of western civilization.

Changing Aesthetics
By Jorge F. Maldonado Serrano
Although an old study, this book contains an extensive explanation of the different problems the reflection of art has faced. Different from a history of art, this book gives a description of the relations that underlie the works of art, the artist and the culture these two are inmersed in. In some sense is a structuralist explanation not or art but of the problems that have been circulating art. That is the reason of the title: six ideas that are underneath the rest of the reflection. Nevertheless, the author relates his explanation with singular events in the history of art, it couldn't be other wy. But the reader will hardly find in a common history of art book those facts about art that will certanly amuse him and would never know if he were to read only history of art.
